Audi's Electrifying Tribute: The A2 E-Tron Concept Celebrates a Cult Classic
Audi has paid homage to the iconic A2 hatchback by transforming one into an all-electric marvel. This one-off project, undertaken by Audi apprentices, not only commemorates the 25th anniversary of the A2 but also showcases the automaker's commitment to innovation and sustainability.

Reviving a Pioneering Spirit

Efficiency and Elegance Reborn

When the Audi A2 first hit the market in 1999, it was a groundbreaking subcompact that prioritized efficiency and environmental consciousness. With its lightweight aluminum bodywork, frugal gasoline and diesel engines, and a sleek design that boasted a low drag coefficient, the A2 was a true trailblazer. However, its high price tag and the prevailing low fuel prices of the time meant that the A2 struggled to find widespread appeal during its initial run, leading to its discontinuation in 2005.

Now, Audi has breathed new life into the A2 concept by converting one of these cult classics into an all-electric vehicle. The Audi A2 E-Tron concept showcases the automaker's commitment to preserving the legacy of its pioneering models while embracing the future of sustainable mobility.

Electrifying Performance and Range

At the heart of the A2 E-Tron is a single electric motor sourced from the Audi Q8 E-Tron, tuned to deliver a robust 197 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque. Powering this electric drivetrain is a 25.9-kilowatt-hour battery pack borrowed from the Audi Q7 plug-in hybrid, which is strategically positioned under the cargo floor to optimize weight distribution and interior space.

According to Audi's estimates, the A2 E-Tron can achieve a range of up to 129 miles on a single charge, based on the European WLTP testing cycle. However, the automaker has hinted that the installation of a second battery pack could potentially boost the range to an impressive 248 miles, making the A2 E-Tron a viable option for urban commuters and eco-conscious drivers.

Modernizing a Classic Design

Audi's design team has carefully curated a series of exterior modifications to the A2 E-Tron, blending the iconic silhouette of the original with modern, electric-inspired elements. Smooth wheels, flush-mounted door handles, and illuminated front and rear badges – similar to those found on the Audi Q6 E-Tron and A6 E-Tron – lend the concept a sleek and futuristic appearance.

These design updates not only enhance the A2 E-Tron's visual appeal but also contribute to its aerodynamic efficiency, further improving the vehicle's range and performance. The result is a harmonious fusion of the A2's timeless design and Audi's latest electric technology, creating a truly captivating and sustainable interpretation of a beloved classic.

A Glimpse into Audi's Electrified Future

The Audi A2 E-Tron concept serves as a testament to the automaker's commitment to electrification and its willingness to revisit and reimagine its iconic models. While the original A2 was not sold in the United States, its legacy lives on through this one-off project, which showcases Audi's ability to breathe new life into its past successes.

Interestingly, Audi had previously explored the idea of a smaller, fully electric A2 city car a decade ago, but the project was ultimately shelved. The Audi Q4 E-Tron, which shares the Volkswagen Group's MEB platform with models like the Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.Buzz, currently serves as the automaker's smallest all-electric offering in the U.S. market.

The A2 E-Tron concept, however, suggests that Audi's vision for the future may extend beyond its current lineup of electric vehicles. By reviving and electrifying a beloved model from its past, the automaker is demonstrating its ability to blend tradition and innovation, offering a glimpse into the exciting possibilities that lie ahead for Audi's electrified lineup.
